ORTHOMOSAIC

​

A single image, composed of hundreds or even thousands of drone images “stitched” together. We deliver a high resolution, geo-located single image of your site, precisely as it appeared on the day the imagery was captured.

​

10x the resolution of satellite imagery, granular features can be identified, such as unhealthy or dead standing individual stems, or the spread of diseases that first manifest among the upper branches of a canopy. An orthomosaic is also the only way to assess and appreciate the true extent of pockets of wind-blow damage.

​

Delivery format: Email-friendly JPEG, delivered via digital download link. Or GeoPDF for importing into such apps as Avenza Maps. Orthomosaic is presented layered over a topographical base-map, complete with scale and North arrow. For customers who are comfortable using GIS systems, we can also deliver the raw orthomosaic as a .TIF file.

STEM HEALTH MAP

Importing the orthomosaic into GIS, we identify all individual stems and graphically represent their condition using a traffic light system: green for healthy, amber for unhealthy/discoloured and red for dead standing. The resulting map enables managers to instantly identify pockets of unhealthy stems that require closer inspection.

​

We also deliver the maps in GeoPDF format. This enables a woodland manager to import them into such apps as Avenza Maps and navigate to problem spots, and even individual stems.

​

Combined with historic mensuration plot GPX data, it's also possible to proof the true accuracy of mensuration extrapolations.

​

Delivery format: Email-friendly JPEG via digital download link. Orthomosaic and stem health data is presented layered over a topographical base-map, complete with legend, scale and North arrow. For customers who are comfortable using GIS systems, we can also deliver the shapefile points data as a .SHP file.

WOODLAND HEALTH REPORT

Finally, we convert the stem health map into spreadsheet format. Using either quarter-hectare transects, or custom zones designated by the customer, we conduct zone-by-zone GIS assessments and record our findings. Compiling data like this allows quick and effective contrasting of stem health data in numeric and percentage terms, taking windblow hectarages into consideration.

Once complete, statistical patterns begin to emerge and questions start to get answered:​

​​​​

  • Is the amount of unhealthy stems in one compartment above or below the woodland's average? By how many stems? What's that in percentages?

  • With a quarter hectare of the compartment newly windblown, what impact does that have on the overall compartmental yield?

  • If the remaining, "healthy" woodland compartment only has 90% healthy stems, to what extent does historic mensuration data truly capture its current yield?

  • Can we ensure future mensuration surveys don't extrapolate data taken from a sample plot placed in the single pocket of 30 unhealthy stems in the entire compartment?

Supplementing mensuration data with these new practices, either for auditing past efforts or guiding future surveys, ensures yield calculations are as accurate as possible.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Email an enquiry to the address at the bottom of the page.

We'll firstly need an outline of the site(s) that you would like to have captured, along with custom zones if so required. This can be as simple as a digital photo of a map with the site(s) outlined in ink, or an outline traced on a screenshot on a mobile device, or a PDF map, or we’re more than happy to deal with GIS shapefiles and directories. We’ll then check the site(s) for any legal or safety concerns and assess whether or not we can safely fly the site(s). 95% of the time there are no such issues.

​

We can cover up to 100Ha (247ac) per day across a maximum of three sites that are up to 40 minutes' drive away from each other. Prices can be negotiated for larger projects, but rest assured no project is too big! The largest single orthomosaic David has generated to date is 893Ha of Scottish peatland, which took 8 days' flying to capture.

​

Once you have made your enquiry, we’ll then be in touch to introduce ourselves and arrange a visit to your site(s), and to address any questions you may have. We’ll then arrange to visit the site during a suitable weather window (drone work is very weather-sensitive!), and deliver the results of the survey in a timely manner.

PRICING

​

Rates for this package comprise of the following:

 

£650 per day’s flying.

​

1 day’s flying involves covering a maximum of 100Ha (247ac) across a maximum of 3 small sites within a 40-minute drive of each other, or 1 large site. Prices can be negotiated for larger projects.

​

£200 for first 20 hectares' worth of analysis. £5 per hectare thereafter.

​

A sample compartment of 100Ha will cost £1,250.
