THERMAL SURVEYS

Detect anomalies in solar infrastructure and wildlife within dense shrubbery and across wide expanses of land.

Seeing things in a different light

Thermal imaging utilises the infra-red spectrum of light to pick up thermal signatures. Combine this kind of technology with a drone and you suddenly have an immensely powerful tool for identifying heat sources from hundreds of metres away. Add on a 156x optical/digital hybrid zoom to the standard "RGB" camera, and you end up with the Mavic 3 Thermal drone, which Drone Photogrammetry Ltd deploys for thermographic inspections of solar arrays and to track and identify wildlife.

WILDLIFE SURVEYS

Using thermal drone technology that enables entirely non-invasive methodologies, we deliver wildlife surveys for land and woodland managers.

Locating deer and recording their numbers across hundreds of hectares of land used to be an arduous, tricky business. The powerful capabilities of the Mavic 3 Thermal, however, is a game-changer in this field. Not only does the 156x zoom allow us to spot and record deer herds from hundreds of metres away across expanses of flat land, but flying tight 120m altitude transsects over wooded areas with the camera in a "nadir" (pointing directly down) position means we can spot thermal signatures through moderately dense woodland canopies.

We can also conduct Nightjar nesting surveys, pinpointing suspected nesting locations from 120m. Elusive Nightjar pairs nest on the ground, which means they can be easily disturbed by humans and dogs. Using the Mavic 3, we can hover at maximum altitude, well out of the way of a male NJ's morning hunting patterns, and track the male's movements while it's active. We can then precisely identify spots to which they seem to return before piloting the drone directly to that location (120m above surface level) and drop a GPS marker in-flight. We then transfer these locations onto a map to deliver to a land or woodland manager, along with the thermal footage to corroborate our findings.

SOLAR PV FARM SURVEYS

We gather thermal images of solar farm installations. In order to provide customers with a robust dataset of images, we adhere to a methodology devised by the industry leaders in the field: safely flying low, tight transsects directly over a farm's arrays, we orientate the drone north and fly along each row of panels, gathering "nadir" (directly downwards) thermal images every 0.7 seconds. We also use an irradiance meter during flights to monitor how disruptive any cloud cover is, pausing the flight if the reading drops below a certain level.

A dataset like this can be used to identify faults and anomalies in panels that require fixing in order to return the farm to optimum efficiency. Note, we only offer this service from the start of May through to the end of September. We also only gather the imagery and deliver the raw dataset to the customer. We are not qualified to provide services beyond this.

Pricing

The rate for our thermal surveys is £650 per day’s flying.

1 day’s flying involves covering a maximum of 100Ha (247ac) across a maximum of 2 small sites close by to each other, or 1 large site. Prices can be negotiated for even larger projects.
